RESIDENT'S REPORT

August 7, 2010

We have all heard of the three R's that are considered the fundamentals of elementary education. These are, of course, reading 'riting and 'rithmetic. Some of you may also have heard of the three R's of conservation of natural resources; reduce, reuse and recycle. But we also need to be aware of, and address, the thee R's of square dancing.

Start with RECRUITING, as we have heard many times before, recruiting needs to involve everybody. Personal contact is truly very important, even to the extent of transporting potential dancers. Inviting them as a guest, to a free well planned night or picnic, can be a great start. Doing demos with audience participation, and having informative flyers available, can also get some excitement going. Also, not to be overlooked is home schooling which is often looking for a satisfactory solution to meet the requirements of planned physical activity.

After you get that interest sparked, a planned RETENTION effort needs to be in place. Develop a buddy system, work to ensure successes, be accepting and help to make a fun experience that one just does not want to miss. We all like when someone shows us that we have a special friend that cares about us and is there for us. Offer to be that special friend!

Last of all be a RESPONSIBLE square dancer. Join the club, offer to your assistance to share the responsibilities of the club's operations. Communicate that you are happy to be there and are willing to create fun for yourself and others. Help the officers to do their job by sharing information, your time and your talents. Be a team player and have fun.

Free brochures about RECRUITING, RETENTION and RESPONSIBLIES are available at

PSRDF has initiatives to support square dancing: New Caller Cuer Program, New Dancer Program and Promotional Program.

Have a fun year dancing,
